What Is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO)? A Plain-English Guide for 2026

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is how you get understood, trusted and cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. Here's what AEO is, why it matters in 2026, and how to make your Webflow site AI-ready.

Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the practice of structuring your website so AI tools — ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google’s AI Overviews — can understand it, trust it, and cite it when they answer your customers’ questions. Where traditional SEO asks “how do I rank?”, AEO asks a sharper question: “how do I become the source the AI quotes?”

That shift matters because search itself has changed. Millions of people now get a complete answer from an AI engine and never click through to a list of blue links. If your business isn’t the one being cited in that answer, you’re invisible for a fast-growing slice of how people discover services.

Why AEO matters now (not in three years)

The behaviour change is already measurable:

  • Google AI Overviews now appear on the majority of searches, and when one shows up, the click-through rate on the top organic result drops from roughly 15% to 8% — close to a 50% fall (Pew Research Center, July 2025).
  • ChatGPT handles billions of prompts a day and reaches hundreds of millions of users — a search surface that simply didn’t exist a couple of years ago.
  • AI-referred visits to websites grew 527% year-over-year through mid-2025 (Frase, 2026) — but only for the brands getting cited.
  • Visitors who arrive via an AI citation convert around 4.4× better than standard organic visitors (Semrush data, 2025). They’ve already read a summary and pre-qualified themselves before they ever land on your site.

So the picture isn’t “AI is killing traffic.” It’s that traffic is getting smaller in volume but much higher in intent — and the businesses that get cited capture it while everyone else watches their clicks erode.

There’s also a clear early-mover gap: around 70% of marketers believe AEO will significantly shape their strategy, but only about 20% have actually started (Acquia, via Frase). For a professional-services business, that’s an open lane.

How answer engines actually choose a source

AI engines don’t simply grab the page ranking #1. They use a retrieval-and-synthesis process: parse the page, find short passages that directly answer the question, score them on authority, freshness and structure, then quote the clearest one. In fact, only about 12% of URLs cited by ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot rank in Google’s top 10 (Semrush, 2025) — citation is a different game from ranking.

The signals that consistently win citations:

  • Direct, declarative answers in the first 40–60 words of a section — not throat-clearing intros.
  • Clear entities and structured data so the engine knows exactly who and what you are.
  • Freshness with visible dates — AI favours recently updated content.
  • Question-led structure (FAQ and “people also ask” formats) that mirrors how people actually phrase queries.
  • Corroboration — claims that can be verified across trusted sources.

AEO vs SEO: you need both

AEO doesn’t replace SEO — it extends it. Good SEO gives engines the crawlable, authoritative foundation they depend on; AEO adds the structure and trust signals that make your content citable. The reassuring part: most AEO improvements lift your traditional rankings too.

How to make your Webflow site AI-ready

The good news is you don’t need to rebuild. AEO optimises the site you already have. In practice it comes down to:

  1. Audit how AI currently reads your site — find where you’re invisible.
  2. Add entity and schema markup so engines can parse and attribute you with confidence.
  3. Restructure content around real questions your audience asks, with direct answers up top.
  4. Keep the SEO fundamentals sharp — titles, meta, internal links, page speed.
  5. Set a freshness cadence so AI keeps seeing current, accurate answers.
  6. Measure impressions, clicks and AI visibility so you can prove it’s working.

This is exactly the work I do for professional-service businesses on Webflow. One recent client saw a 53% lift in impressions and 60% more clicks after this kind of optimisation.

Get cited by AI when your customers ask

If people are asking ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google about what you do, the question is simply whether your business is the one being recommended. That’s what AEO fixes.

I optimise existing Webflow sites so answer engines understand, trust and cite them — without a rebuild. See the full service on the AEO services page →, or book a free AEO call → and we’ll look at where you stand today.
